The introduction of most modern agricultural technologies and procedures, while increasing productivity over the short-term, have tended to widen the gap between the have and have-nots, be inefficient in terms of the energy equation, create ecological imbalances, set up barriers to cooperation within and between communities, support the development of agro-industries in cities rather than in villages, and be insensitive to their impact on human development. To avoid these negative outcomes the following six criteria should be considered when developing or adopting agricultural technologies and procedures.
