TL;DRAbstract

Abstract : The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory is developing a new magazine concept that will reduce the land area encumbered by ESQD arcs and improve the efficiency of weapons handling operations. This new High Performance Magazine (HP Magazine) can reduce encumbered land by 80% and significantly reduce operational costs. The most important factor in the improved performance of the HP Magazine is the reduction of the Maximum Credible Event (MCE) to the Net Explosive Weight (NEW) of High Explosive (HE) in an individual storage cell. Internal cell walls are being developed to mitigate the effects of an explosion in any cell and prevent sympathetic detonation in adjacent cells. The performance of the HP magazine also is enhanced by soil cover and tunnel type exits that reduce the safe distance for debris and overpressure. The MCE in a magazine storing conventional palletized weapons (e.g. bombs, projectiles, mines) would be reduced from about 200,000 lbs to about 10,000 lbs. The MCE f
