Microbial BOD sensors: Problems of practical use and comparison of sensorBOD and BOD5
TL;DRAbstract
For some years microbial sensor system for the determination of BOD have been use in waste water control. The main advantage of the microbial BOD sensor is the short measuring time. However, the sensorBOD-values are not identical with BOD5 in all cases. These differences are caused by the different measuring principles and the variable composition of waste waters. The microbial sensor gives a response on the easily assimilable compounds in waste water. Possibilities to improve the coincidence of sensorBOD and BOD5 are: (i) selection of microorganisms with suitable substrate spectrum and combination of microbial species, (ii) alteration of sensor activity by pre-incubation with the desired substrate or waste water, (iii) enzymatic or acid hydrolysis of waste water, and (iv) use of suitable calibration substrate.
