OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expressions of SSEA-3 and SSEA-4 in benign and malignant tumors of the breast and in breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-468,as well as their relationship with the breast carcinogenesis. METHODS: Expressions of SSEA-3 and SSEA-4 were immunohistochemically/immunocytochemicaaly investigated in 50 benign (fibroadenoma, adenosis of breast) and 50 malignant (infitrating ductal carcinoma) breast tumor samples, in addition to the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-468. RESULT: The positive rate of SSEA-3 in breast carcer was 34% (17/50), and it was also discovered that SSEA-3 expression was significantly associated with positive ER expression in the malignant samples (P＜0.05). Besides, the positive rate of SSEA-3 in benign breast tumor was 16% (8/50); However, the positive rate of SSEA-4 in breast carcer was 58% (29/50), and its positive rate in benign breast tumor was 36% (18/50); Both SSEA-3 and SSEA-4 showed a higher level expression in the malignant tusamples compared
