Composting and Beneficial Utilization of Composted By‐Product Materials
TL;DRAbstract
Composting continues to gain importance throughout the world for conversion of organic by-products to new resource. Composting systems can be classified as static piles, aerated static piles, turned windrows and aerated turned windrows. This chapter lists factors affecting the cost and performance of the composting system. Of these factors, nutrient balance, water content, particle size, porosity and pH are most important in formulation of the compost mix. Factors such as O2 concentration, temperature, and water content are most important during management of the process. Consistent performance of composts requires that blended products be correctly proportioned to achieve good chemical, physical and biological properties and that process conditions are controlled. Composting offers the potential to transform marginally useful by-products into very useful products resembling humus for production of crops by supplying nutrients, controlling plant diseases, and assisting in bioremediatio
