TL;DRAbstract
While the majority of concretes provide suitable performance, some facilities are plagued by cracking that develops shortly after the concrete is placed. Undesirable early-age cracking can accelerate deterioration causing it to fail prematurely. Therefore it is necessary to further understand the behaviour of fresh concrete and its tensile strength at an early age. Plastic shrinkage and cracking are believed to be caused by the lack of bleed water that is needed to replace the evaporating water from the surface. When a concrete dries, the water between the particles at the surface forms a complex system of menisci, producing a negative pressure within the internal pores. This negative pressure is refer to as suction and osmotic pressure will arise if there is presence of dissolved salts in the pore water. Hence, it is necessary to understand the cracking process, in addition to certain parameters such as tensile strength, strain of failure and shrinkage. A study of the effect of suctio
