of Mental Health of the Public Health Service conducted a survey of the general hospitals in the United States. The original purpose of the survey was to ascertain which general hos- pitals accepted as inpatients persons with a primary diagnosis of suspected or actual men- tal illness in order to bring up to date the number of general hospitals to be included in the census of mental patients. As a result of the survey, the number of hospitals included in the census of mental patients rose to 546 com- pared with 157 prior to the survey.Data were also collected on type of patient accepted, hospital size, and the types of therapy available for each hospital offering therapy. It is believed that presentation of data on the types of therapy available at the time of the survey would be useful since such data would serve as a baseline for future studies of the types of therapies available in general hospitals. This is particularly so in the light of the more recent developments in drug therapy, s
