Aim To investigate the chemopreventive effect of isatin (ISA) against 7, 12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) induced mammary carcinoma in rats. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups: control group, model group, ISA (25, 50, 100 mg•kg^(-1)) groups. MBA was given to induce mammary carcinoma. The incidence rate of mammary carcinoma, the index of the spleen and the thymus gland, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdhyde (MDA) and the tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in blood serum were observed. HE staining was used to examine the tumors. Results ISA could delay the occurrence of DMBA-induced mammary tumors, reduce the incidence of mammary carcinoma; compared with model group, the index of spleen and thymus gland of different levels of ISA doses was increased.
