TL;DRAbstract

There has been an increased attention to research on beliefs about mathematics and mathematics education and it has become one of the central elements of study in mathematics education. This paper reports from a qualitative research study on the beliefs of four Icelandic teenage girls about mathematics, the study of mathematics, and themselves as learners of mathematics. Their descriptions and thoughts are viewed in the light of theories and newfound results of the existing quantitative research on girls´ beliefs about mathematics and the study of mathematics. The main conclusions of this research are that these particular Icelandic girls:
