Characteristics of Philippine native goats (Capra hircus L.)

TL;DRAbstract

Philippine native goats dominate the goat population in the Philippines and are raised primarily for their meat (chevon). Due to their early sexual maturity, short gestation, short kidding or reproductive intervals and lower capital requirements compared to cattle and carabaos, Philippine native goats are considered important genetic resources. However, indiscreminate crossbreeding with introduced breeds possess a serious threat which may lead to erosion of this genetic resource. In support of the local breeding program to optimally utilize and conserve native goat genetic resources, this paper presents the characteristics of native goats in terms of blood protein types, mature weight and external body measurements, coat color and pattern, presence or absence of horn and some traits and reproductive performance. Data on birth weight and weaning weight, growth rate, semen characteristics and carcass yield of Philippine native goats are also reviewed and compared with the Anglo Nubian br
