Importância dos polimorfismos do metabolismo da serotonina e da catecol o-metiltransferase na suscetibilidade para a Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2
TL;DRAbstract
Introduction: Type II diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease characterized by deficient insulin segregation and resistance to the same substance, resulting in an excessive increase of blood glucose. Its pathophysiology seems to involve complex interactions between environmental and genetic factors. On the other hand, obesity seems to be the main risk fator associating type II diabetes to insulin resistance. Actually, Diabetes International Federation predicts that only in Europe, around 52 million people live with diabetes and that every year more than half million deaths occur in individuals between 20 and 79 years of age. Due to developments in understanding the genetic component of diabetes, prevention and new therapies can take into account risk factors, namely the susceptibility genes in the natural history of disease (etiology and progression), which may contribute to the development and disease severity. Several studies report that serotonin or 5HT is involved in the ap
