In his introduction to the novel, Herminio R?os C. first raised the question of genre when he declared: '.. .y no se lo trag? la tierra, 'en su creaci?n en los pensamientos, sentimientos, personalidad del escritor, y en su estructura y presentaci?n tem?tica revela una unidad que se aproxima al g?nero de la novela.1 To justify this closeness to the form, R?os speaks of the fictional narrator a unifying element and of the structure having two frame stories and twelve interior stories symbolically representing the year.
