This article describes the history, hopes and successes of OnStar. OnStar is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, that responds to drivers' emergency needs. In a typical month in the third quarter of 2005 OnStar was involved in: 25,000 roadside assistance calls; 500 stolen vehicle assists; 5,500 Good Samaritan calls; 900 automatic airbag notifications; 32,000 remote diagnostics; 15,000 emergency calls; 12.6 million hands-free calls; 44,000 remote door unlocks; and 340,000 route support calls. Motorola supplies OnStar with a telematics control unit that incorporates global positioning system and wireless technology to connect a vehicle to the OnStar call center. An important part of OnStar is its Advanced Automatic Crash Notification System, which is helpful to first responders to a traffic accident. This notification system supplies emergency responders with information on direction and force of impact, whether or not there have been multiple impacts, and whether or not the veh
