The mechanism of self-organized beating of cilia

TL;DRAbstract

The internal structure and physical properties of cilia are well known.The relevant hydrodynamics is also well known.But the mechanism behind the coordinated activity of the dynein molecular motors is not known.Based on experimental observations, it has been concluded that this mechanism cannot be due to control from the cell.The possible mechanism has to be self-organized and the trigger for motor activation/deactivation has to be something related to the geometry of the ciliary axoneme.This thesis critically evaluates the most widely cited models at present and suggests an alternative model for how the cilia beat.From the literature we obtained wave forms of ciliary beating at different instants in the beat cycle.These instants were digitized and interpolated.From this data, we were able to calculate the hydrodynamic force distribution (external force distribution) on the cilia and the translational and rotational velocities of the cell body.Once the hydrodynamic force distribution i
