TL;DRAbstract

To characterize the electronic properties of superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , its work function \varPhi has been measured by two different methods. From the photoelectric and electrical determinations, it is shown that \varPhi of polycrystalline YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 is close to 4.0 eV. The relatively high work function of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 for its low electron density implies that a strong exchange-correlation potential exists in the bulk. Systematic studies are necessary in order to determine whether or not the work function is a useful parameter for the new high- T c superconductors as well as for the conventional ones.
