MARY LEMAN GRIMSTONE

TL;DRAbstract

It is appropriate that the first session of a Hobart-based Festival which has the theme of 'Re-writing Australia', and underlines women's place in that story, should hear about Mary Leman Grimstone. Resident in Hobart 1826-9, she has long had recognition as one of colonial Australia's first two novelists. The reference is to her Woman's Love, published in London in 1832, although in fact Grimstone's previous novel (Louisa Egerton, which appeared in 1830) may have taken form as she sailed to Australia or soon after her arrival.
