Deregulation, rising expectations on the part of the travelling public and rail company shareholders, coupled with increasing competition, are forcing train operators to significantly improve their on-board services. This is despite having to meet tighter operating budgets and give a better return on capital invested. Improving on-board passenger information and providing on-train entertainment is seen by many train operators as a critical part of making the train experience more attractive. These apparently conflicting requirements, typified by rising customer expectations set against tighter operating economies, implies that any passenger information and entertainment system must generate additional revenue to pay for its day-to-day running costs and if possible recoup the capital investment within a reasonable period of time.
