TL;DRAbstract

The landscape of the eastern seaboard of the United States contains numerous enigmatic stone structures, including cairns, U-shaped constructions, balanced rocks, standing stones, stone rows, and effigies. I am undertaking a systematic study of sites and site clusters of this type throughout the area east of the Appalachian Mountains. As far as I am aware, sites of this sort have been identified as far south as the Pennsylvania-Maryland border, but there are also some reports of sites in the Southeast which may be relevant. There are also some sites reported in adjacent provinces of Canada. While it will not be feasible for me to visit many of the known sites, I will investigate a significant sample of them through records in State and Provincial Historic Preservation offices and among antiquarians, to test a series of research questions, using environmental parameters developed in conjunction with avocational antiquarians and indigenous peoples.
