TL;DRAbstract

Starting with the example of Geneva, a sovereign republic from the time of the Reform, this article deals with the social and political stakes of desertion during the Enlightenment. Along with the military and legal problems posed by deserters, their mobility was the object of increasing attention from states desirous of ensuring their prerogatives in the field of territorial sovereignty. Control registers, descriptions, postponed vacations, «international » agreements : the dispositions developed to limit deserters' wanderings are all, in spite of their slight operational efficiency, elements which contributed to the territorialisation state control.
