Introduction: The origin of many malign and benign tumors as well as chronic sialadentitis is still unclear. We tried to test several different pathologies of the major salivary glands of the head for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human papillomavirus (HPV). These viruses are known to cause neoplasms in the head and neck region. Methods: After isolating the DNA from the tissue of each sample, the material was tested for EBV due to real time PCR. A possible infection with ‘high risk’ and ‘low risk’ human papillomavirus was proven with an HPV-typing reverse hybridization kit. Results: 35 warthin tumors, 25 pleomorphic adenomas, two carcinomas, two non-Hodgkin lymphomas, one myoepithelioma and one lipomatuous tumor as well as 34 samples with chronic sialadenitis and four samples with sialadenosis were tested.
