High-rate anaerobic treatment (HRAT) systems are used extensively for the treatment of wastewater from industrial processing plants. The system is used to remove soluble organic material in the wastewater by biologically converting it to methane and carbon dioxide. Despite the extensive application of HRAT systems, there are still concerns relating to the biological stability of the process. As a result, the HRAT systems are generally overdesigned and operated with conservative flowrates and pH set points. Consequently this approach contributes to high installation and operational costs for the system. A dynamic model of the HRAT process was used in this thesis to gain better understanding about its operation and control. The thesis was divided into two sections.
