TL;DRAbstract

Trained nurse midwives perform many important maternal and general health duties in the developing world. They deliver babies, vaccinate infants, teach infant hygiene and nutrition, and bridge the gap between the isolated rural health centers and the communities they serve. Unfortunately, these trained professionals are in very short supply, leaving many areas of the world with no regular maternal and child health services. However, most villages, even in remote areas, have "granny" midwives, i.e., usually old women who perform deliveries in the traditional manner. UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) has initiated a twin policy in the child health field. While UNICEF actively supports initial and refresher programs for professional midwives and auxiliaries, it also is assisting developing countries in establishing simple hygiene training at the village level to bring the "granny" midwives under control of the rural health centers.
