A SYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF RELATER-AXIS PHRASES IN CHARLES DICKENS’ HARD TIME

TL;DRAbstract

This research paper is aimed to answer the two problems which are the functions and structures of relater-axis phrase construction in Charles Dickens’ Hard Time. The functions refer to syntactical functions base on the characteristic of syntactic components in the dependent clauses viewed from structural grammar. The structures of relater-axis phrase constructions deal with the forms of filler class in axis slots viewed from tagmemic grammar. This research is qualitative in which the object of the study is relater-axis phrases in dependent clause constructions of complex sentences used in Charles Dickens’ Hard Time. The data are taken by coding and identifying dependent clauses in complex sentences that used relater-axis phrases in novel entitle Hard Time by Charles Dickens which is abridged and simplified by Viola Huggins 1979.
