TL;DRAbstract

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the engineeringnproperties and behaviour of coal tailings and the processes theynundergo during and following their deposition in tailingsnimpoundments. The consequential behaviour of coal tailings in thenfield under embankment loading, simulating the effects ofnoverburden placement for rehabilitation for alternate land use, isnalso be investigated. This behaviour is then modelled usingnavailable computer programs. The overall results of the thesisnenable some progress to be made towards optimising coal tailingsndisposal, dewatering and rehabilitation.n n The present research is largely restricted to coal tailings fromnthe Bundamba district of the West Moreton Coalfield ofnsouth-eastern Queensland.
