«Petite Ile», a Reunion Island Agricultural Community in the Process of Transformation. In the framework of Departementalization (1 946) and with a steady demographic growth until 1974, the agricultural population was transformed after the decline of the colonial system, the cutting up of large properties and the increase of agricultural output, due mainly to wide-spread use of fertilizer and especially to irrigation. These efforts were supported by the organization of the agricultural profession. The more extensive use of irrigation, the undertakings of SAFER, A.P.R. and Young Farmers were accompanied by a considerable growth of fruit growing and truck farm activities, by a development of animal raising and by a recent development of the highlands : transformation of the «Relais» domain and ne
