New paradigms for clinical engineering and health technology assessment: case studies in Mexico

TL;DRAbstract

For many years the definition of the work of biomedical engineers has been expanding until it encompasses fields such as plant engineering, medical instrumentation, information technology and even design and supervision of construction of new spaces. We propose a new approach to this problem of growing breadth of the responsibilities of the clinical engineer that is similar to the interconsults that are regularly done in the clinical practice. We present two case studies where the tasks of the clinical engineer overlap some tasks better suited for other experts and present the conclusions that the technological demands that are presently being encountered are better handled by a collaboration between experts in the field where the biomedical or clinical engineer can work as a coordinator and the rest of the experts can provide important insight in order to come up with a better solution to the problems being solved.
