Technological Base for Agricultural Sustainability in sub‐Saharan Africa

TL;DRAbstract

Africa has an impressive history of high-quality research data. History of research in soil and water management and crop improvement was summarized by Lal. The research base has led to the development of a wide range of technological options with a potential for the sustainable use of soil and water resources. The concept termed "on-farm client-oriented research" appears to be an important strategy for involving farmers in the decision-making process at all stages of research program, technology development, and validation. The principal goal is to adopt a problem-solving approach focused on the farmer as the primary client. The suggestion of rural systems research also is a useful strategy to generate off-farm opportunities to support farm enterprise, e.g., input-based industry, cash and credit system, processing and storage, marketing and transport, etc. Sustainable agriculture cannot be developed without the creation of off-farm supportive industries.
