When German armies crossed the border into Poland on September 1, 1939, the catastrophe anticipated in much of Polish literature during the preceding decade had finally come to pass. During the long years of war and occupation which followed, a new generation of writers came to maturity, their careers launched under conditions of unprecedented hard ship. A number of poets and prose writers of the ill-fated generation of the 20's survived the war and went on to become leading figures in Poland's post-war literary renaissance. Some of them, most notably Rozewicz, Herbert, and Borowski, have achieved international recognition. Two members of this generation, however, ? Tadeusz Gajcy and Krzysztof Kamil Baczynski ? are scarcely known outside of Poland because their meteoric careers began and ended during the years when Polish literature was hidden from the world by the Nazi occupation.
