'Meeting through Modesty: Jewish-Muslim Encounters in the Internet'

Emma Tarlo-2013-06-01

TL;DRAbstract

Religious dress practices are often perceived to be insular and socially and politically devisive. Questioning this view, this article analyses some of the interchanges taking place on-line between orthodox Jews and Muslims concerned with the issues of modest dress and fashion. It suggests that a shared pre-occupation with modesty acts as a meeting point of sorts through which religious women from different backgrounds and faiths recognise issues of mutual concern and develop curiosity and at times sympathetic engagement with each other. Although often limited to the Internet, and at times laced with feelings of mutual suspicion, such examples of Jewish-Muslim inter-faith engagement provide an interesting challenge to the assumption that orthodox women are insular and secluded and that their adherence to religious dress codes acts as a barrier to social interaction.
