TL;DRAbstract

A basic, pragmati c rhetoric that focuses on the purposes and processes of writing, ra ther than o n skills-based drills.The connectio n between reading and writing is established and illustrated by an abundance of examples fro m 35 students and 100 professio nal writers.Assignments after every point of content guide students in applying it immediate ly to th e ir own writing, and several assignments per chapter call for collaboration and for small-group discussion.Students are shown how to maintain a "double-ent ry journal" and a "grammar log" throughout the course to help them recognize the features of effective writing, and how to diagnose and avo id their pe rsonal troublespo ts.Fifteen rev isio n wo rksheets guide students th ro ugh the writing process and help them assess their purpose, ideas.o rga nizati on, and tone.
