TL;DRAbstract

During the past decades Balto-Slavic accentology has become increasingly important for comparative Indo-European linguistics. Thanks to the investigations of scholars like Stang, Dybo, Illic-Svityc, Ebeling and Kortlandt, the relationship of Balto-Slavic pitch and stress to Indo-European has largely been clarified. In the first place, the connection between the Balto-Slavic prosodie system and Indo-European has been established. In the second place, it has become clear that the Balto-Slavic opposition between fixed stress and accentual mobility is historically identical with the Indo-European opposition between barytona and oxytona, though the original distribution has been obscured by a number of developments. The rapid development in the field of Balto-Slavic accentology has made it difficult for Slavists and Indo-Europeanists who have not specialized in the area to keep pace. This paper is intended as a brief introduction to Lithuanian accentuation for Slavists and Indo-Europeanists
