Looking ahead for quality improvement in EFL teacher education

TL;DRAbstract

The provision of teacher education has been of great concern all over the world and there continue to be numerous calls for reform and change. In particular, within the field of foreign language teacher education in Asia, teachers must be prepared to meet the challenges and standards for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teaching. To do this, one need to take the social contexts of EFL teaching in Asian countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam into account but conducting a critical socio-political analysis of the language teaching environment at the macro level. Several researchers (Duong, 2003; Gorsuch, 2006; Le, 2007a; Nunan, 2003b; Pham, 2001; 2006; Chowdhury & Farooqi,in press) believe that the poor quality of English language teaching in these situations is partly attributable to a lack of sound teacher training and teacher professional development.
