TL;DRAbstract

About 10% of female breast cancer patients are under 40-years-old. In this group 10% are pregnant or nursing at the time of diagnosis. Radical surgery is indicated for those in Stages 1 and 2. Up to 35% of young breast cancer patients have histologically favorable tumor types. Significant amounts of estrogen receptor protein are found in 50% of primary breast cancers and in 45% of metastatic lesions. Progesterone and prolactin receptors have also been demonstrated. Tumors from postmenopausal patients have significantly higher levels. This is thought to be due to the postmenopausal deficit in endogenous estrogen leaving more receptor sites available. Normal mammary tissue rarely contains significant amounts of receptor protein. Determination of hormone receptor protein content has been the most useful indicator of hormone-dependent cancers. Prognosis in young women is as good as for older patients. Termination of pregnancy does not alter the course of the cancer. Deferment of primary tr
