Simulation forced induction of a dual fuel, internal combustion engine

TL;DRAbstract

This report details the design and testing of a simulated forced induction system on a dual-fuel internal combustion engine. A system was successfully designed and manufactured to deliver compressed air to the intake of a hydrogen-diesel engine that had been built from an existing Yanmar, single-cylinder diesel engine. This system contained data recording instruments that allowed the condition of the flow entering the engine intake to be analysed. A laptop computer that used LABVIEW to analyse and store the instrument readings acquired this data. System tests were performed on the operating dual fuel engine and showed that up to 80kPa of boost could be deliver to the engine before pipe seals failed. The simulation system and its performance parameters have been experimentally validated and have shown it to operate in an efficient and safe manner.
