Chinese Women and the Global Village

Jan Ryan-2003-11-01
3

TL;DRAbstract

This is the introduction and bibliography to Chinese Women and the Global Village by Jan Ryan. This, the first major study of Chinese women in Australia, is all about global journeys and perspectives. It is also a story of various sites that connect Australia to the pathways of women of Chinese ancestry. Focusing on the post 1970s, this is a narrative that does not begin or end with Australia. Chinese women and the global village is a rich source of information, ideas and controversies, building on a wide-range of sources. It is at once compelling, challenging and confronting. Jan Ryan interrogates issues of ethnicity, gender and identity to present the diversity and complexity of the personal and working lives of women of Chinese heritage. Her study looks at, among other things, how differing birthplaces, homelands, and a sense of being 'Chinese' influence identity formation, family construction and work environments, demonstrating what it means to be a woman of Chinese ancestry
