A new method for the determination of trace lead based on mesoporous Al-MCM-41 separation/preconcentration combing with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was proposed. The characteristic of the synthesized material was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and infrared spectrometry (IR). The optimal conditions of adsorbing and desorbing on mesoporous Al-MCM-41 material for Pb(superscript 2+) were investigated. After surging 20 minutes at room temperature and pH 5.5, the lead could be quantitatively adsorbed by mesoporous Al-MCM-41 and the adsorption capacity was 2.5 mg/g. The adsorbed lead could be eluted from the surface of the sorbent with 0.2 mol/L EDTA. Effect of common matrix ions on the recovery of the lead has also been investigated and the result showed that they did not interfere on the determination of lead. The mesoporous Al-MCM-41 could be re-cycled more than 10 times. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.5-30 mg/L for Pb(superscript 2+)
