The outcome of extensive research in northern India, in particular at the city of Lucknow, my chapter explores the potential 'clash' between western European and Indo-Islamic ideas, rituals and practices to do with cosmopolitanism. Two of the critical facets for approaching the sophisticated coexistence of aesthetics in Utter Pradesh are gifting and collecting art both of which were hybridized by the Anglo-Indian encounter
