Contemporary legends are verbal stories which are told by close persons or modern communication devices and become fast widespread. They serve themselves as a communication tool and address central themes of today"s life-style which is marked by modern technology. In these stories prejudices (e.g. wishes, hopes, fears, and fears of material loss, illnesses, injury of the private sphere etc.) are reflected. They are close to life and reality. These stories were collected by the folklorist Rolf W. Brednich and his students in Germany, which led in 1990 to the first German collection of contemporary legends Die Spinne in der Yucca-Palme. The book not only could attract numerous readers, but also Brednich’s call in his preface led to an exceptionally broad resonance. Until today Rolf W Brednich received more than 6,000 letters in which his readers informed him about new stories, comments or literature so that he could publish four other volumes during the following years.
