TL;DRAbstract

The disease effects of suspended particulate air pollution have been under study in Buffalo and its environs for several years. The community was classified into four pollutant areas by means of measurements obtained from high-volume samplers located at 21 stations and operated over a two-year period. Economic classification was achieved by grouping of census tracts into five levels on the basis of median family income. Age and sex specific death rates among whites for cirrhosis of the liver for the pericensal period, 1959 to 1961, showed a graded positive association with suspended particulate air pollution level when economic status was controlled. The association was strongest in the lowest economic groupings. The findings indicate that urban particulate air pollution may contain toxic agents capable of acting directly or synergistically to cause cirrhosis of the liver.
