The Helensbu-rgh miners, who had no co-operative stores back In Scotland, formed a co-operative store In 1802, renting a small cottage In Wa)ker Street an4 later larger premises at the corner of Stuart and Lllyvelc Streets, where they COJlQucted a gener~J store.The premises were burnt down in 1906 at about the time North H elensburgh branch store was opened.The Society later rented and purchased the building in Walker Street, which was replaced by a modern brick store offlcially opened on June 9, 1966.Industry in H elen~burgh features Helensburgh Manufacturing Company, established In June, 194-5, under spoasorsblp of the Government which, with seventy employees produce many types of clothing, some of which is used to till Government contracts.Another firm m~nufactu'res handkerc.hlefs.
