TL;DRAbstract
Economic growth changes the environment; economic growth and the environment jointly affect population health; population health influences economic growth. Using province-level panel data covering the pericd 1990-2006, this paper analyzes the relationship between growth, environment and population health in China on the basis of a simultaneous equations model. The results indicate divergent trends in emissions of various industrial pollutants, and suggest that pollution impedes economic growth. Income has a significant positive effect on population health, while the effect of industrial pollution is significantly negative. Population health has no significant contribution to economic growth. Finally, education and services are beneficial to economic growth and environmental improvement.
