TL;DRAbstract

When Poland was resurrected in 1918, it took over five separate codes of inheritance jurisprudence from those states under whose jurisdiction the territory comprising postwar Poland had remained for the past cen tury and a quarter. In the Western provinces ? those areas under former German control ? the German Civil Code Book V governed inheritance procedure. In the Southern Provinces ? under Austrian control ? the Austrian Civil Code Book of Procedure governed, except in that small section of the Southern provinces which had been under Hungarian control, as per the 1867 Austro-Hungarian agreements and where the Hungarian law had been in force. Those formerly Russian areas of Poland remained under Part I of the Svod Zakonov, volume 10, which formulated inheritance procedure. Those central portions of Poland, in cluding the Warsaw area, which had been included in Napoleons Grand Duchy of Warsaw, used the Code Napoleon which had been intro duced by the French conqueror in the beginning o
