Abstract: This paper focuses on the building process of the Avenida del Oeste (West Avenue) in Valencia, including the first projects dating back to the beginning of 20 th Century and the definitive architectural works, ca. 1950. The Avenida del Oeste (nowadays named Avenida Baron de Carcer) became a modern reference of the cosmopolitan city, taking into account the examples of European cities as Paris, London, Vi- enna or even Madrid. The building of great avenues that sectioned the historical city center was an example of transgressive urban planning. It was also perceived as a clear solution to social and hygienic problems, mat- ters that deeply concerned the public opinion in the final years of the 19 th Century.
