TL;DRAbstract
An analysiL of the structure of possessive-adjective phrases (e.g., new suitcases, new women's suitcases) in English looks at some data that appear to conflict with the intuitive order of S-structure possessives preceding adjectives. A solution to this apparent anomaly is proposed: it is not the compounding of possessive-noun combination that regulates pre-possessive adjectives, but the non-referentiality of the possessive form. The analysis is presented for English, then some data from Finnish are presented to suggest that the constraint is more universal than might be supposed. A brief bibliography is included.
