TL;DRAbstract
Silicone greases are used extensively in oxygen systems at low pressures (0-0.4MPa) on account of their excellent lubricating and sealing properties. However, ignitions have occurred with silicone greases when they have been used in high pressure oxygen systems (>10MPa). The data presented in this paper critically examines the oxygen pressure regimes under which silicone greases can be used safely. The BS3N100 high pressure oxygen ignition test has been used to evaluate the spontaneous ignition temperature (SIT) in oxygen of a variety of silicone greases. The results of these tests and data on the pressure dependence of the SIT are given.
