Two Notions of Justification in Science
TL;DRAbstract
The sciences are not only the most sophisticated human\nenterprise of knowledge gathering, they are at the same\ntime epistemically self-conscious to a considerable degree.\nAssessments of the epistemic status of data, inferences\nand theories play an important role in the very practice of\nscience, which therefore includes a wealth of epistemic\nnotions, norms and considerations. In one sense of the\nexpression "epistemology of science, some sort of an\nepistemology is thus included in scientific practice. This\nepistemology is usually captured under the heading of\nmethodology, and its explication – e.g. concerning the\nstandards of confirmation or theory choice – has also been\na central business of the philosophy of science. Still, there\nare further epistemological questions about scientific\nknowledge claims that are typically not addressed within\nscientific practice. These include topics such as the\nunderdetermination of theories by all evidence, the nomiracle\nargument
