Bioprinting: Is this the Solution to the Organ Transplant Crisis?
TL;DRAbstract
Objective: Bioprinting involves the deposition of biological materials layer by layer to construct a functional, three dimensional tissue or organ. Some of the many advantages to bioprinting include the ability to dispense cells and living materials in specifically coordinated locations, individualize the constructs to each patient, and utilize the patient’s own cells to eliminate rejection of the tissue. This technology has the potential to eradicate the organ transplant waiting list. Methods: The databases searched to find literature included PubMed, U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources, and Organovo website. Results: Twenty-four articles were found. These articles included original research and general article reviews. Conclusion: With this technology, health care could be revolutionized. A significant amount of research and testing is still required for bioprinting to reach its maximum potential. However, this technology has the capability to be implemented in routine care
