Albedo and temperature measurements of selected pavement surfaces

Each type of pavement surfaces has different properties in term of surface temperatures that have effects to the temperature of its surroundings. The objectives of the research are to understand the thermal-related properties of several types of pavement surfaces, to obtain the properties for each type of pavement surfaces, such as the albedo and temperature profiles and to give considerations for further research in developing cool pavement as a part of the effort of reducing urban heat island effect. In the research, four type of pavement surface were used. Those were new hot mix asphalt (HMA), old HMA, chip seal and Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement surfaces. Two properties of pavement were investigated, which were albedo and temperature profiles. Albedo values were investigated by calculating ratio of incident and reflected radiations measured by the pyranometer.
