EXPERIENTIAL MEANING IN THE STUDENTS’ INTERPRETATION OF SONG LYRICS

Meaning represented in a text may further be represented in a different text. This study examines how students represent the message in song lyrics into their own texts. This study therefore examines students’ comprehension of song lyrics, the representation of their understanding of song lyrics in their own texts, and the meaning making through representational strategies. This study applied a qualitative method. The data of this study were gathered from the students’ interpretation of song lyrics through writing task. The instrument to be used in analyzing the data is a systemic functional grammar (SFG).The result shows that the students are able to interpret the meaning of the song lyrics. Having analyzed the students’ texts using transitivity, the study shows that there are different types of processes and their ways applied in the texts.
