CIFE-Status Paper on women in fisheries

Shekhar Nath Ojha,S Salim Shyam-2002-01-01-Eprints@CMFRI Open Access Institutional Repository (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute)

TL;DRAbstract

Women depend on fishery resources for food, work, income
\nand identity, especially, to nurture their children. Yet, they
\ntend to have less control than men over these resources and
\nthe associated wealth. Initiatives in fisheries management
\nand fisheries conservation are rarely scrutinized for their
\npotential impacts on women. The World Wide Fund
\npresented discussion on the proposal for a Marine
\nStewardship Council (MSC) development, which is believed
\nto share this weakness. The MSC ignores the complex
\nrealities of women's work, its diversity and the differing
\nplaces they occupy in fish product markets. An examination
\nis made for the implications of the proposed MSC by
\nconsidering its potential impacts on access to fish and its
\nconsumption among different groups of women. (Neis, -B.l.
\n1996) Women participate in fisheries in different ways in
\ndifferent sectors.
